Customer Reviews

July 14 2015

As an artist it is so rewarding to see paintings I have created hanging in the homes or offices of my customers. It’s great to receive customer reviews, both from local buyers and international collectors, especially when it is positive!

Following the recent sale of one of my large paintings shown at The Darryl Nantais Gallery in Linton, the customer sent me a lovely email with the attached photo (pictured below) to express their delight in their new purchase. It turned out that the customer is also a craftsman, Ted Dunmow, who supplies the gallery with his own beautifully crafted pieces. Ted kindly sent me this photo of the painting hanging in his home amongst some of his own work. Do pop into the gallery to view both my latest paintings and Ted Dunmow’s stunning pieces for sale in the Summer Exhibition at The Darryl Nantais Gallery.

And here’s the customer testimonial:
14th June 2015
“Hello Sue,
Whilst visiting The Darryl Nantais Gallery two weeks ago to deliver some of my work which Karl is kindly including in the Summer Exhibition my wife and myself were impressed by your “Path to the sun” painting which we then purchased. It is now hanging in pride of place in our lounge and we are delighted with it. Thank you for painting this lovely picture. We will look forward to seeing more of your work in the future”…

Pint of Science – Creative Reactions 2015

June 30 2015

Creative Reactions is a new art-related event organised by Cambridge Creative Network and the Cambridge Pint of Science team as the grand closure to the Pint of Science festival. This was a pilot project held in Cambridge for the first time this year where art met science with an finale show on 21st May. I was one of 55 artists involved in this unique collaboration with the Pint of Science festival. This annual event takes place over three days in the month of May simultaneously across the world, offering fun and engaging talks on the latest science research in an accessible format to the public – in the pub!

Each artist was paired with a scientist in order to create artwork in response to their individual talk. I was paired with scientist, Dr Iris Moeller, and her talk was entitled Rising Waters: Living on the Edge.  Iris was to cover research on rising sea levels and storm surges that threaten coastal populations with extreme coastal flooding and erosion, providing the latest scientific insights into how water flows around and over shorelines, and how these coastal regions can be protected and ‘future-proofed’.

Wave Studies
As a starting point for the project I arranged to meet up with Dr Moeller.  It was great to meet and be offered an insight into the Department of Geography of Cambridge University! After our meeting Iris sent me loads of links to projects and fieldwork her team have been working on. One of these links was video footage of a large wave flume experiment “Wave Dissipation by salt marshes under extreme water levels and waves”. This pioneering study demonstrated how salt marshes can play a key role in buffering the coastline from waves and high water levels. This seemed to particularly resonate with me both visually and as a sustainable environmental solution – I was fascinated by the movement and sway of the salt marsh plants as the waves flowed over back and forth. Thumbnail sketches and visual ideas ruminated.

The Pint of Science pub talks were brilliant and then…the Creative Reactions finale show brought all the artworks together into an innovative and eclectic exhibition held at St Barnabas Church, Mill Road, Cambridge CB1 2BD. The one-day only exhibition was officially opened by the Mayor of Cambridge with music, entertainment and prizes. Proceeds from the selling exhibition went to charity partner the Arthur Rank Hospice. The finale show proved successful beyond all expectations, so Pint of Science will return next year and Creative Reactions is now very much part of this annual festival. Watch this space for updates!

In conclusion, this has been an amazing collaborative project. For me it has been a fascinating journey of discovery and development as an artist that has not been without its challenges along the way. Ultimately this has been a very positive and enriching experience.  I am excited to be part of this collaboration going forward.

It’s taken a little while to get my new shop set up on Artfinder, but I am delighted that I have already had my first few sales in 2015!  I have also had some amazing customer feedback which demonstrates how easy Artfinder is to use as an online Art sales platform.  Here’s my customer testimonial:

17 February 2015

“I used Artfinder for the first time last week having seen the ideal Valentine’s gift. It was a little last minute on my part and since I wasn’t able to use my laptop I did the whole transaction on my iPhone – it was so easy. The Artfinder website was very user friendly and straight forward to use. This is so important nowadays with life being so hectic. Within a few minutes I had chosen and paid for some beautiful artwork for my husband and was looking forward to its delivery. The communication with Sue was constant throughout and my package arrived safely and efficiently. The art was very well protected and is just the most perfect gift! Thank you so much Sue, it’s been a pleasure! “

And here’s what the customer purchased:

My latest commissioned painting

November 26 2013

I have just finished my latest commissioned piece.  Here’s how this project developed in the following series of “work in progress” photos…

It is always lovely to be asked to work on commissioned projects. My customer really liked my collection of abstract mixed media collage artworks inspired by many studies exploring my response to movement, light and reflections of the sea.

Tropical Waters - After the Rain

Tropical Waters – After the Rain

I love a new challenge – sharing ideas and working with my customer to create something just for them. It can also bring a wealth of new ideas to create new inspiration for my own projects. My customer had a particular colour palette in mind, so having discussed the proposed work and made some preparatory sketches and colour samples, here’s how the project started…

Work in progress - watercolour and pen on paper

This was followed by tearing up these painted sheets of watercolour paper… re-constructing selected pieces that work with a newly painted watercolour background paper… looking for movement and synergy between the different torn pieces… to create the final collage and mixed media artwork.

And here’s the finished artwork! I am pleased with how this has turned out, and my customer liked it so much they commissioned two further small artworks to compliment the first.  I hope to get a photo of them once they are in their new home so I can share with you then.

My Cambridge Open Studio 2013

July 31 2013

July has been a busy month whilst I have been exhibiting at The Artists’ Marquee for Cambridge Open Studios. This is my third year exhibiting in the marquee, and again it has proved to be a really good experience all round. I have met many really interesting visitors, welcomed customers back and acquired new customers too – all very rewarding – BIG THANKS to all!

“Spring Fields” was my first sale at the Preview Evening.  This is one of Sue’s Originals collection of ink & watercolour original paintings – each ink & water colour painting being unique, highly collectable and individually signed by myself, the artist, offering the opportunity to buy original art at an affordable price!

Curating my show in The Artist’s Marquee has highlighted the variety of media I work in, which has developed into 3 areas – oils on canvas, mixed media & collage abstract artworks inspired by my response to the sea and movement of water, and Sue’s Originals ink & watercolour paintings collection of local landscapes.  This painting below, “Meadow Dance”, is the latest oil painting completed for this exhibition.

The great thing about being part of Cambridge Open Studios is the people and the experience of being there with your work – to engage with the public, bringing art to everyone. I have shared my exhibition space with a lovely group of fellow artists, all of us offering a wonderful array of different artwork.  The 2013 exhibition has been brilliant, and I am already formulating my ideas for Cambridge Open Studios in 2014!

Cambridge Open Studios at the Artists’ Marquee

June 30 2013

It’s ‘count down’ week to my next exhibition… Cambridge Open Studios!  I will be showing my latest collection of artworks at The Artists’ Marquee, Burwash Manor. There’s a really interesting mix of artists and crafts people from a wide range of disciplines.  There are some familiar faces and new ones too.

The Artists’ Marquee is now constructed and ready for exhibition – all we need now are the artworks and of course, the artists!  It’s been “all hands on deck” over the weekend to get the exhibition space ready.  The workload has been shared between the exhibiting artists, putting up the marquee on the grass and constructing the gallery space within.  Lots of physical labour shifting the large display boards and screwing them into place to make secure exhibition stands.  It’s a team effort but thanks must go to Matt who led the layout and construction.  Sunday was painting day to make sure everything looks clean and white – ready for the artwork!  It’s all taking shape…

I am really excited about the Preview Evening on Friday 5th July from 5 – 8pm, so come along and join us for a glass of Pimms on the lawn with a live band, whilst taking a look at the art!  And, this year we are supporting local Cambridge charity, Tom’s Trust.  The 14 exhibiting artists have donated artworks to the ‘posh’ raffle to be drawn at the Preview with all proceeds going to this very special local charity.

As well as volunteering as a Local Area Distributor for the COS guides, I have been regularly distributing in the Burwash area to make sure the shops there have a plentiful supply, and the guides have been going fast, it’s a popular place for picking up the Guide!  You’ll find me on page 43 no. 125a of the Guide, as well as being listed in the Galleries & Arts Organisation section on page 61 G3 Burwash Manor.  I will be exhibiting weekends 2 & 3, 13th-14th and 20th-21st July.

Ahead of the exhibition we’ve had some good press coverage in the local Cambridge publications of Cambridge Edition, Style Magazine and the Editor’s choice in Cambridgeshire Journal, so I do hope it will bring plenty of visitors our way during the weekends in July.

“Spotlights”, Cambridge Style Magazine, July 2013, page 90

“5 Things to do this Month”, Cambridge Edition, July 2013

There’s plenty to do over the next few days, and I’m looking forward to showing BRAND NEW artworks at The Artists’ Marquee.  Please check out my Facebook  and Twitter pages for sneak peeks of latest paintings!

House & Garden Fair in aid of Asthma UK

May 8 2013

It’s less than a week to the 15th annual House & Garden Fair in aid of Asthma UK, on Tuesday 14th May, open 10 am – 4pm at Chilford Hall, Linton.  My stand will be one of 50 selling everything you need to revitalise your home, garden and wardrobe, and this year I am delighted to be joined by fellow artisans offering unusual and original handmade goods including printed textiles, ceramics, artworks, hats and jewellery.  It’s a lovely charity event with a great atmosphere.  For more information please visit the website and here you will find a link to download the event brochure and also a photo gallery.

Ahead of this year’s event, I have received some lovely publicity from the local media.  Last Friday Cambridgeshire Journal posted a photo of one of my paintings with a write-up about the Fair on their Facebook page.  You can see the post here – scroll down to see the write-up.  Then, on Saturday 4th May, in the Living section p:48 of the Cambridge News paper, a wonderful double-page spread on the House & Garden Fair.  I am featured with fellow Cambridge artisans Heather Stowell Jewellery, Emma Bennett Collage, Amanda MacPhail Ceramics & Jo Alexander garden furniture.  The feature raises awareness of the fight against asthma, and includes an interview with 21 year old Kirsty Ashman diagnosed with severe asthma.  It’s just brilliant to get good publicity leading up to the House & Garden Fair.  I’m really looking forward to welcoming visitors to my stand!

I have been getting my artwork ready – framing paintings, finishing off a new selection of Handmade Originals cards, and packaging up my printed greeting cards with colourful ribbons.  At the Fair this year I will be showing my latest collection of Sue’s Originals ink & watercolour paintings, some oil paintings, and handmade and printed greeting cards.  I have also been distributing brochures and putting up posters as part of advertising and promoting the event.

On other news, I have also submitted for the Fowlmere School Spring Art Exhibition at Fowlmere School, Cambridge, from 10th – 12th May.  This weekend exhibition actually takes place just before the House & Garden Fair, with a Preview this Friday evening from 7.30 to 10pm.  The exhibition continues on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th May from 10am to 4.30pm.  Here I will have a selection of small oil paintings and greeting cards on show.  So, if you’re not able to visit the House & Garden Fair next Tuesday this is another exhibition where you can see my paintings!

So, with the last few days of preparation, with my trusty notebook in-hand, and lots of “To Do” lists, I hope I won’t forget anything!

Hope to see you at these forthcoming events – all welcome!
